Dr Lawrence Yeung was presenting the talk

On 10 November 2004, the Electronics Division organized a technical seminar on "Bluetooth Technologies and Applications". The speaker Dr. Lawrence Yeung, Assistant Professor, Hong Kong University, gave a talk on the latest development on Bluetooth technologies and its applications.

Dr. Yeung opened the talk by providing an overview to the development of Bluetooth. The Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) was founded in 1998 by company such as Ericsson, Nokia, IBM, Toshiba, Intel, Agere, Motorola, 3Com, Microsoft. Bluetooth is perfect for mobile devices as it is small, low power, and low cost. The specification is Open, and royalty-free. Dr. Yeung then went on to elaborate the improvement on Blurtooth Specification v2.0, which is released on 8 Nov 2004. The main features of Bluetooth Core Specification Version 2.0 are faster transmission speed (3 to 10 times), lower power consumption, simplification of multi-link scenario, further improved Bit Error Rate (BER), and backward compatible to earlier version.

Before the end of the seminar, Dr. Yeung demonstrated the BlueCell which is a Bluetooth-based Micro-cellular Network. The BlueCell can support handover as small Bluetooth access-points are installed over the building and connected to the Internet. The seminar ended with a question-and-answer session and a souvenir was presented by Ir Dr Ken Lo to Dr Yeung to thank for the interesting and great talk.
