Abstract:
There is a quiet revolution happening in
energy consumption of consumers. Mobile devices that constantly demand
opportunities to recharge the batteries have resulted in infrastructure
changes. Many public places now offer charging stations. New technologies offer
highly efficient sources to charge mobile devices wirelessly. They are advertised
as highly efficient, with figures being quoted in the very high nineties. But
on closer examination they do not comply with energy star requirements.
Consumer convenience is sold at the expense of our environment. Energy
efficiency is being sold to households in many areas. But are these systems
like solar energy really efficient? What role does the smart grid play in
energy efficiency, or how about the electric car? The way power is delivered is
changing, a communications protocol is also a source of energy. This new source
of energy (USB Power) is changing the rules in power delivery. This
presentation will examine the direction consumer power is taking, and it will
also look at some of the disadvantages of these new trends and technologies.
Biography:
Stefan Mozar obtained his engineering
degrees from the University of New South Wales (Sydney), and his MBA from the
University of Technology, Sydney. He is a Chartered Professional Engineer
(C.P.Eng.), and a register Professional Engineer in Australia. He is a Fellow
of the Institution of Engineers Australia, and of the IEEE.
His experience includes consumer
electronics, telecommunications, and industrial electronics. He spent most of
his career in R&D labs; but has also taught for a number of Australian,
Asian, and British Universities. Currently is an Adjunct Professor at Guangdong
University of Technology, China. He has extensive experience in designing
consumer products, and telecommunications equipment. For these systems he
helped design and establish factories in India and Vietnam. He has contributed
to projects that won about 30 international design awards in a number of
countries like Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, China,
Chile, Argentina, and Brazil. His work has resulted in a number of patents and
publications, as well as some book chapters. He is frequently invited as
keynote speaker, and has developed many short courses, including some on DTV,
Cable TV, and Satellite Systems.
Stefan served on the board of the IEEE
Consumer Electronics Society as President, where he successfully established a
series of global conference and introduced the CE Magazine. He swerved on the
Hong Kong IEEE section, and was the Chair of the Hong Kong CE Chapter. He is
also the VP of conferences for the Product Safety Engineering Society, and the
CEO of Dynexsys, a Sydney based technology consulting company. He received
numerous IEEE awards.
