Smart Sensor Network with Active Mindset for Railway Industries

Date, time & venue

2020-10-19;18:30 – 20:00;Webinar

Introduction for the Webinar:

The idea smart monitoring using new IoT solutions has become more and more apparent in introducing much faster and pin-point fault inspection in the world of engineering.  To ensure reliable train services, MTR has developed a Long Range (LoRa) IoT network to support ground-breaking sensing devices dedicated for trains, stations and trackside equipment.  Unlike traditional LAN and cellular network, LoRa promises low power consumption and installation cost, enabling wide coverage and straight forward deployment with minimum manpower involved.  Utilizing existing infrastructure for telemetry communication, data can be obtained seamlessly in the whole MTR network, covering both outdoor and tunnel areas.  Such an implementation introduces the concept of prescriptive maintenance, acting in-advance before nasty breakdowns. To illustrate the concept further, an innovation – Automatic Relay Monitoring Application (ARMA) device has been developed to provide real-time data of in-borne train relays with LoRa communication capability, providing real-time statistics of equipment deterioration rate with alarm mechanism to MTR maintenance cloud.  As the world is moving towards the digitalized era, a smart railway sensing network shall provide an efficient and strategic railway maintenance landscape, enabling rapid and active response to ensure reliable train services for customers in Hong Kong.

Communications & Control Engineering Manager

MTR Corporation Limited

Ir. H.W. Chan is a widely experienced Engineering Manager in Communications, Control Systems and Network who has over 20 years of related exposures, most of which have been associated with the MTR Corporation in Hong Kong. Mr. Chan has broad experience in a no. of railways around the region with in-depth knowledge in many telecom, control facilities and network in use by railways. He heads up a team of Internet of Things (IoT) young engineers to drive innovation by introducing smart technology for enhancement of telecommunication systems and control systems as well as the maintenance regime. The introduction of the smart systems contributes to the Corporate growth and support the improvement of staffs and passengers’ safety, railway operations and customer experience. He has also shared expert opinions for the adoption of smart transport and digitalisation to MTR subsidiary railways in China and overseas.

Ms. Hebe Tsang

B.Eng.(Hons.), MSc, MIET

Design Support Engineer – Communications

MTR Corporation Limited

Ms. Hebe Tsang is a Design Support Engineer, specialized in telecommunications, in MTR Corporation. She obtained her bachelor’s degree of Engineering in Electronic Engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in year 2014 and her master’s degree of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineer from the University of Hong Kong in year 2017. Entering railway industry since 2014 as a graduate engineer, she participates in a wide range of telecommunications projects for railway operations as well as innovation projects with the introduction of smart technologies to the Corporation such as video analytics, big data analysis and IoT technology. Keeping in pace with the Corporate development into a smarter maintenance era, she takes a role to input new elements to the systems and to bring an enjoyment of high system performance to passengers.

Mr. Raphael Wong

B.Eng., M.Phil

Graduate Engineer

MTR Corporation Limited

Mr. Raphael Wong is the MTR graduate intake of 2019 who graduated with an MPhil degree in HKUST.  His previous research focuses on the area of control theory and robotics.  He has published two conference papers and have completed his thesis with the topic - an LQG motivated leader-follower consensus with uncertainty. He also has experiences in the development of embedded systems and IoT sensing devices.  Recently, he and his team have won grand prize of the HKIE innovation award with their self-developed device – Automatic Relay Monitoring Application (ARMA), applying condition monitoring techniques for train-borne critical equipment.  As an extension, Mr. Wong is currently working with several parties within MTR Operations division, hoping to develop further innovative ideas to enhance working efficiency and reduce intensive labour in daily maintenance of MTR.
