Program Highlight
"Sustainable IoT Development for Smart Cities"
The internet of things (IoT) started in the 1980’s as a concept for inventory management and control, and to date has evolved to become the next wave of mobile computing and communications. According to Gartner, Inc., the population in the world of “internet of things” will be 4.9 Billion in 2015 growing to 25 Billion in 2020 with a spending on services at about US$69.5 Billion in 2015 to US$1.9 Trillion in 2020. A more optimistic report from McKenzie Global Institute suggests this value is at a maximum of US$6.2 Trillion in 2025. These data is based on our current mode of urban living from buying a can of soft drink from a vending machine, riding on the public transportation system, medical and health care records, to tracking the delivery of your online purchase on Taobao. There bound to be new ways and alternative modes of use of such a diverse system: take for example the convergence of the personal computer and the mobile phone to become mobile computing in recent years.
The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Electronic Division is organizing the third Hong Kong Electronic Symposium (HKES) 2015, with a special focus on the development trend of this exciting new technology and its applications. The HKES 2015 will be held at the Charles K Kao Auditorium at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park in Shatin, Hong Kong on 17 April 2015. The organizer has invited government officials, legislators, industry leaders, and research professional sharing their views, forecasting the trends, and demonstrating new developments in the arena of IoT. The audience will receive the first hand information of what our world looks like in the next decade and bring us to the next level beyond mobile computing.
