Chairman’s Annual Report 2017/2018

Reported by Ir Wilson Kwok, Chairman, Session 2017/2018

Overview

It is my honour to serve as the Chairman of the HKIE Electronics Division.  I present this Annual Report to our members this evening at the Annual General Meeting.

This is an exceptional year for the Electronics Division as the effort of the committee and volunteers has led to remarkable results.  I am pleased to advise that we have been able to achieve the targets we set ourselves at the beginning of the session to promote the profession, attract the next generation in joining the industry and re-establish Hong Kong as the hub of the electronics engineering in Asia Pacific.  In line with the HKSAR Government’s initiative to develop smart city and invest more in innovation and technology, the Electronics Division has organised many events in 2017/18.

Winner Circle of HKIE Electronic Project Competition

After the successful completion of the HKIE Electronic Project Competition in 2016 and 2017, the Electronics Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (i.e. HKIE) has organised a Winner Circle of the HKIE Electronic Project Competition in end 2017.  The objective of this Winner Circle is to provide a platform for the winners in these 2 competitions to update the development of their winning products and obtain feedbacks from the market.  Last but not least, we took this opportunity to promote HKIE membership to the winners and the participants in this event.

Hong Kong Electronics Symposium 2018 (HKES2018)

The fifth annual symposium HKES2018 was held on 16 April, 2018 at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park.  It was a one-day event with the theme of “Smart City – from Cliche to Digital Transformation”.  There was a record-breaking attendance of over 280 delegates in this symposium and the symposium has stimulated interesting discussions and interactions.  It is my gratitude to our speakers, sponsors, delegates in their participation and especially to the organizing committee who has tirelessly looking into every detail making this event a success.  A special thank you to The Hon Charles Mok, JP and Ir Dr The Hon Wai-kwok Lo BBS, MH, JP, in their active participation in the morning panel session, and our HKIE President Ir Thomas Chan for his Closing Remarks.  We are excited to carry on with this annual event, and I am glad to report that the theme for next year is already in place, selected by popularity vote through a mobile app at the end of this year’s symposium.  This is a vivid demonstration of technology at works.

Other Learned Society Activities

Other than the Hong Kong Electronics Symposium, we has co-organised the annual Asian Lighting Forum with HKTDC.  The forum was held on 6 April, 2018 in HKCEC and we have invited the Highways Department of the HKSAR to present their development of smart lamp post in Hong Kong.  The forum was well received by the delegates.

In additional, a total of around 50 other activities have been organised in the session, including activities organised by our division and activities co-organised or supported by our division.

Annual Dinner

The Annual Dinner of this session will be held on 25 May, 2018.  We have also received support from Legislative Councillors, guests and participants from government departments, learned societies, universities, trade associations and utilities as well as electronics companies.  A total of 12-15 tables are planned, offering another good networking opportunity among electronics engineers.

Forward Planning

I am glad to report we have now laid down a framework for succession planning, and our scheme to attract more volunteers to join the committee.  Starting from this session, the Electronics Division will not only promote Electronics as its name implies, but also Technology as technology is now playing a key role in Electronics engineering.  The aim is to establish a long term strategy for the Electronics Division in a more structured approach to support the engineering community.

Conclusion

I would like to thank again the committee members and volunteers for their hard work helping us achieve our goal for this year.  I hope I can continue serving the Electronics Division as the incoming Chairman in the next session and lead the Division another successful year.
